Illuminating and unworkable, maybe.

I'm just an average retail investor, not the sophisticated financial analyst that the author is, so I might have some things wrong here. But, here goes..

The book is a fairly quick read though I did take the time to think about things as I went along and re-read sections to make sure I thought I understood it. The author's main point is that companies return value to shareholders through multiple means: dividends, share buybacks, debt paydown, and investments and aquisitions. He concentrates on the first three, but mentions and then drops the last one. He makes note that due to changes in a 1982 law, more companies are returning value to shareholders by share buybacks, which needs to be taken into account to get a fuller picture. Also, value is returned to shareholders in the paying down of debt, which increases shareholder claims on future earnings. I think I'm getting this right. I found this discussion to be quite illuminating and I started feeling that I really needed to be taking those aspects into account when choosing my purchases. I don't know why he first mentions shareholder returns due to investments and aquisitions and then goes completely silent about those. It left me wondering.

By the end of the book, I was looking forward to trying some of the screens that he suggested in the last chapter. I visited 3 of the, I believe, 4 websites that he said screened for shareholder yield (dividend yield + net buyback yield + net debt paydown yield.) First I went to the Turnkey Analyst website. They have a screener but it is completely opaque and certainly does not screen for Shareholder Yield by itself. Then I went to ValueInvesting.eu. That does have a Shareholder Yield (in name) screener but doesn't include the Net Debt Paydown Yield component. Furthermore it warns about the volatility inherent in the Net Buyback Yield. Hmmm. I then went to YCharts, which for $50 a month, you can play around with what they have. So much for the suggested screeners that I tried.

So I decided to try and evalute my companies based upon the Shareholder Yield concept. The shareholder dividend yield is easy. But how about the Net Buyback Yield? Some years a company might buy back shares, many years they don't. So how can I include the volatile nature of buybacks in my current valuation? Do I use a 10 year average? And what does that mean for what I should do right now? If a company just completed a buyback, do I now sell because I got those returns and I likely won't be getting any more Share Buyback returns for a while? Or do I use that information when evaluating new companies and try to time my purchases to just before a new share buyback starts? Furthermore, take Intel who is currently buying back shares; they borrowed billions to fund the buyback! How is that returning value? Do I limit my investments to only those companies that consistently buy back shares year after year, just like dividends? So I couldn't get this to work so well. Then I looked at debt paydown yield. I could make more sense there, but often companies would take on more debt, sometimes at the same time as they were paying down debt. And often companies take on new debt with no paydown. The author's concept of debt paydown includes the net change in paydown, but it didn't seem to include net increases in debt. If debt paydown is considered returning value to shareholders, shouldn't debt increases be considered taking value from shareholders? After all, a debt increase will *reduce* shareholder claims on future earnings. So it seemed I had to take into account new debt as taking shareholder value, which it didn't seem to me the author takes into account. But often the new debt was used to fund new investments and aquisitions. Now, investments and aquisitions were indeed mentioned, briefly, in the book as a means of returning shareholder value, but it was never incorporated into his final Sharehold yield formula. So I felt I had to extend his concept to take care of that. Well, the more I took all those things into account, the more it looked like his idea of Shareholder Yield ended up just being Free Cash Flow / Market Cap. Is that what this all boils down to? At least THAT would be something I could actually calculate and it does remain more consistent over time.

I'm sure the author would have some input on my comments, perhaps to set things straight. But that's what I got out of it. It certainly served the purpose of making me think more carefully about these things. But, so far, I have found the author's Sharholder Yield concept difficult to use to make better investment choices. In spite of that, I think this is a good book. Well written, an enhanced perspective of shareholder returns, definitly got me thinking and the ideas it contains are worth far more than the purchase price. If you are interested in value investing and are not already well familiar with these ideas, then I recommend you buy it, study it, and do what you can to incorporate the concepts into your own analyses. I'll be reading it again.

This is a review of Shareholder Yield: A Better Approach to Dividend Investing by Mebane Faber, a well-written book packed with information, more of a White Paper really, which took me less than an hour to finish.

It starts with a hilarious poem about the six wise men from Indostan, each of whom perceives one aspect of the elephant & mistakes it for the whole. (A very minor quibble: the story comes from the Jain tradition, not Hindu or Buddhist.)

The main conclusion of the book is that a portfolio consisting of stocks screened for high "Shareholder Yield" outperforms the markets (has a positive Alpha, in industry parlance) - without taking on additional risk (at least as measured by standard deviation of returns). Shareholder Yield is defined as the sum of three factors: dividend yield, net share buybacks (buybacks minus new stock issuance) and net debt pay-down. The author systematically walks us through each of these three factors and presents evidence that each factor individually adds Alpha to the portfolio. And to top it off, he presents evidence that combining the three factors outperforms each of the three individual factors.

The introduction quotes Warren Buffett that the main financial job of a CEO is allocating capital. That is the whole idea behind this book as well, from the perspective of an investor looking to outperform the market. The three aforementioned factors are the levers that a CEO has to return value to the shareholder by way of allocating capital.

The data presented are only from 1982 to 2012, a relatively short time-period for measuring the success of an investment strategy. This is mainly because a key law was changed in 1982, which led to share buybacks becoming more and more popular tools for capital allocators.

Overall the book is highly recommended for a short and concise presentation of a focused investment strategy.

Fresh way to look at investing

Meb Faber is definitely continuing his fresh views on ways to invest. The Ivy Portfolio changed my views on long-term investing and this book has also made me see things in a new light. I'd always known that dividends make up the majority of returns over time, but it was interesting to see how this can be improved upon by adding share buybacks and other metrics. Definitely worth a read as shareholder yield is a subject gaining momentum on Wall Street as an "up and coming" strategy.

Interesting, insightful and lively

If you are over 50 and have a real mailbox, you know AARP, and this is the book you should read about this influential organization and the age group it represents. The book is lively, well written and very interesting, with insights about AARP and the "boomer generation" that I found fascinating. Fred Lynch goes well beyond the stereotypes of AARP and the "boomers", placing both in a broader perspective. With access to the leadership of AARP and interviews with many contemporary thinkers, Lynch shows how AARP has worked hard to overcome its image as a glorified insurance broker representing greedy seniors, and how 50 to 65 year-olds are far from a homogeneous group. Certainly some people now approaching retirement were protesters and involved in the social upheavals of the 1960s and early 1970s. But others were on the other side of these issues and have more traditional social views. As America debates its financial future, this book could not be more timely. Lynch clearly describes the differences in background and priorities between the "AARP generation" and those who are younger and are being asked to carry much of the financial burden for seniors who are generally unprepared for retirement. As these generational conflicts heat up, AARP may end up as a powerful uniting force for seniors. If you want to understand this important aspect of the future of our society, read this book!

Professor Lynch's One Nation Under AARP appeals both to scholars and to general readers. His concern is with the 78 million aging baby boomers and their courtship by the newly modernized and transformed 40-million member AARP.

With lively, often humorous, writing, he profiles the sociological and demographic characteristics of the boomer generation and the potential political influence of this huge group. The boomers have come of age - and old age- in a changed and changing society and in a changed and changing economic and cultural global environment. Many who have taken a secure retirement for granted are now worried by the real-estate meltdown, the stock market crash, and the diminishing of their retirement accounts. Seniors vote in higher proportion to other age groups but they have not thus far voted as a united bloc. Will they be galvanized by these events and use their "senior power" to fight against the threats to Medicare and Social Security and other social supports?

Lynch also analyzes AARP' efforts to study and recruit aging boomers and its role in the passage of the controversial Affordable Care Act ("Obama Care"). In so doing, he provides a long overdue analysis of AARP's commercial and political activities. This is a timely and highly readable book for anyone interested in American politics and social change.

One Nation under AARP offers a fascinating profile of a leviathan organization struggling to balance competing agendas of its for-profit and advocacy divisions. Fred Lynch also deals thoughtfully with AARP's sometimes conflicting strategies to serve today's seniors and the aging baby boom generation.

More broadly, Lynch offers important insights into the pivotal role AARP plays in setting the national agenda for Social Security and Medicare. He examines thoughtfully the conflicting impulses of conservative older voters to support entitlements at the same time that they rail against "big government." He asks important questions about the potential potency of older Americans as a voting bloc, the future of health care reform and the Tea Party.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the inner workings of policymaking in Washington affecting older Americans.

Everything Eric Lofholm does shows his heart. The book is a short read, but it continually gives insight - just like Eric. This is one of the best values in books on selling.

Considering Eric had the same sales coach in his early days that Jay Abraham and Spike Humer and others have used in the past, Eric insights definitely come from very good stock

About the Author

Rashid A. Saeed received his BSc in Electronics Engineering from Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUST) and his PhD in Communication Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). He served as a senior researcher at MIMOS Berhad and then at Telekom Malaysia R&D, where he was awarded the Platinum Badge for Outstanding Research Achievement Award. Dr. Saeed is currently with the Sudan University for Science and Technology (SUST).

Rashid has published and is responsible for over 70 research papers, tutorials, talks, and book chapters on the topic of UWB, cognitive radio, and radio resources management. He was awarded two US patents and has filed for eight more. Rashid is a certified WiMAX engineer (RF and core network) and is a Six Sigma–certified Black Belt, based on DMAIC++ from Motorola University. He is one of the contributors of IEEE-WCET wireless certification in its earlier stages, and is a senior member of the IEEE, IEM Malaysia, and Sigma Xi.

Stephen J. Shellhammer leads a cognitive radio project within the Qualcomm Corporate Research and Development Department. He is currently the chair of the IEEE 802.19 working group on wireless  coexistence, leading a project on TV white space coexistence. He was also the technical lead on spectrum sensing within the IEEE 802.22 working group. He is currently a member of the IEEE 802 executive committee and was also the chair of the IEEE 802.15.2 task group on wireless coexistence. Before joining Qualcomm, he was the Director of the Advanced Development Department at Symbol Technologies, and later worked at Intel in its wireless local area network division. Stephen has a BS in Physics from the University of California, San Diego; an MSEE from San Jose State University; and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was an adjunct professor at SUNY Stony Brook, where he taught graduate courses in electrical engineering. He is a senior member of the IEEE.

From the mists of prehistory to the present day, Japan has always had stories of fantastic monsters. There are women with extra mouths in the backs of their heads, water goblins whose favorite food is inside the human anus, elephant-dragons which feed solely on bad dreams, baby zombies, talking foxes, fire-breathing chickens, animated blobs of rotten flesh that run about the streets at night, and the dreaded hyakki yagyo: "the night parade of one hundred demons"—when all of the yokai leave their homes and parade through the streets of Japan in one massive spectacle of utter pandemonium.

What are yokai? Put simply, they are supernatural creatures of Japanese folklore. The word in Japanese is a combination of yo, meaning "bewitching," and kai, meaning "strange." The term encompasses monsters, demons, gods (kami), ghosts (bakemono), magical animals, transformed humans, urban legends, and other strange phenomena. It is a broad and vague term. Nothing exists in the English language that quite does the trick of capturing the essence of yokai.

This field guide contains over 100 illustrated entries covering a wide variety of Japanese yokai. Each yokai is described in detail—including its habitat, diet, origin, and legends—based on translations from centuries-old Japanese texts.

This book was first funded on Kickstarter in 2011 and then revised in 2015.

About the Author
Matthew Meyer is an American illustrator living in rural Japan. He grew up in South Jersey and studied illustration at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. During a summer study abroad program in Japan, he fell in love with traditional Japanese art and culture, which strongly influence his artistic style. In 2007, he moved to Japan, where he has been studying and illustrating Japanese folklore ever since.

Fabulous book

I recently received my copy of this book from my Kickstarter pledge and I must say after watching its development over the last six month or so it is a fabulous piece of work. The art is of a very high quality and a consistent style throughout the book. Each yokai has their own full page piece of art along with a description of them. Well researched from Japanese folklore this book is a must for anyone wanting to know more about yokai in the English language. It exceeded my expectations and is a joy to read.

Beautiful and informative

I got my copy of the book through the Kickstarter campaign, and just received it a couple days ago. I admit, when I first opened the box, I was a little disappointed by the initial appearance of the book - the cover was dark, and not very legible, it didn't look very impressive. Inside however, is another story. The artwork is beautifully done, both in terms of the drawings themselves, as well as the coloring. Each yokai/creature has 2 pages to itself - one full page illustration, and another page with description, associated legend, descriptions, and more. It makes a great resource for anyone interested in the supernatural creatures and legends of Japan.

Informative with exquisite art

After hearing that someone was writing a book about Japanese yokai, in English, I knew I had to support this Kickstarter. I was not disappointed in the slightest when I received my digital copy. While I wish I had gone for the hard copy, as a book like this is easier to read when you can easily flip pages, I was still quite satisfied with the quality and obvious care put into creating this work.
