The correspondence between Tare Lhamo and Namtrul Rinpoche is the first collection of "love letters" to come to light in Tibetan literature. Blending tantric imagery with poetic and folk song styles, their letters have a fresh vernacular tone comparable to the love songs of the Sixth Dalai Lama, but with an eastern Tibetan flavor. Gayley reads these letters against hagiographic writings about the couple, supplemented by field research, to illuminate representational strategies that serve to narrate cultural trauma in a redemptive key, quite unlike Chinese scar literature or the testimonials of exile Tibetans. With special attention to Tare Lhamo's role as a tantric heroine and her hagiographic fusion with Namtrul Rinpoche, Gayley vividly shows how Buddhist masters have adapted Tibetan literary genres to share private intimacies and address contemporary social concerns.

About the Author
Luca Turin was born in 1953 and educated in France and the UK. He holds a PhD in Biophysics from the University of London, and his research touches on olfaction and anesthesia. His book The Secret of Scent describes some of his work on olfaction, on which he also lectured at TED. In 1992 he published, in French, the first book of critical perfume reviews. Later, in collaboration with Tania Sanchez, he wrote the more comprehensive Perfumes: the A-Z Guide and The Little Book of Perfumes. He has won the Prix Jasmin (France) twice and the Jasmine Prize (UK) once, for excellence in writing on perfume. He was a columnist for Swiss magazine NZZ Folio for eleven years and contributes perfume reviews to Style Arabia and WWD.

Delight, broken into bite-sized pieces

Delight, broken into bite-sized pieces. I can't remember the last time I wished any given essay I was reading were longer, let alone every one in a collection. Luca's writing is vivid, funny, and teaches me things without making me feel like a dummy for not knowing them already. Yes, half of the book is "about" perfume, but it's more than a collection of reviews or lists of notes. It helps to explain why those of us whose favorite intoxicants have names like "No. 5" and "L'heure Bleu" feel the way we do. All art opens windows onto the entire world, and perfumery is an art. Even if the only scented thing you've ever worn is by Axe, you should read this. (And then stop wearing Axe, for god's sake.)

An exceptional writer, one of my favorites. Turin's strength as a writer is his obvious ability to grasp the world and its complexity, metaphorically.....a most immediate, compelling and powerful form of comprehension. He is genius at translating the realm of boundarylessness, (like perfume and music) into tangible form. This book is pure entertainment and serious mind food. Next I suggest you check out Perfumes: The A-Z Guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, which is "as gripping as any thriller".

Very well written manual

Just passed my FM exam with a 9/10 score. I found this to be easier to follow and more thorough than the Actex manual; if this doesn't get you pass the exam, actuary probably isn't a good field for you.

The Introduction to the second edition of this volume was already printed when the Arctic exploring ships, H. M. S. Alert and Discovery, returned to England, and I avail myself of this opportunity to express the feelings of admiration which the undaunted courage and perseverance displayed by its gallant crews have given rise to abroad; and to repeat, with warm enthusiasm, that "welcome-home" which is still finding expression over the whole civilised world.

The year 1876 will undoubtedly be written with golden letters in the annals of English Arctic exploring, for not only the north, but also the north-east, was the scene of English enterprise.

At the same time that Captain Nares and Captain Stephenson, under the most trying circumstances, succeeded in pushing the Government ships through the heavy barriers of ice which obstructed the outlet of Smith's Sound, another Englishman, Mr. Charles Gardiner, boldly penetrated the Kara Sea. Mr. Gardiner visited Barendsz Yshaven, and brought home from thence a valuable collection of highly interesting relics.

The following is a short account of this very successful cruise.

Loved this book: a reprint of the original journals of Gerrit de Veer chronicling the Dutch voyage to discover a northeast passage to China, and the horrific experiences which left them all on the brink of death in the arctic. An amazing account of human ingenuity, endurance, and survival. Go read it. Preferably in the original Dutch (the translation leaves something to be desired, it has quite a few mistakes).
