About the Author

John J. Macionis was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania.

 

John Macionis' publications are wide-ranging, focusing on community life in the United States, interpersonal intimacy in families, effective teaching, humor, new information technology, and the importance of global education.

 

In addition, John Macionis and Nijole V. Benokraitis have edited the best-selling anthology Seeing Ourselves: Classic, Contemporary, and Cross-Cultural Readings in Sociology. Macionis and Vincent Parrillo have written the leading urban studies text, Cities and Urban Life (Pearson). Macionis’ most recent textbook is Social Problems (Pearson).

 

John Macionis is Professor and Distinguished Scholar of Sociology at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he has taught for almost thirty years. During that time, he has chaired the Sociology Department, directed the college’s multidisciplinary program in humane studies, presided over the campus senate and the college’s faculty, and taught sociology to thousands of students.

 

In 2002, the American Sociological Association presented Macionis with the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching, citing his innovative use of global material as well as the introduction of new teaching technology in his textbooks.

 

Professor Macionis has been active in academic programs in other countries, having traveled to some fifty nations. He writes, “I am an ambitious traveler, eager to learn and, through the texts, to share much of what I discover with students, many of whom know little about the rest of the world. For me, traveling and writing are all dimensions of teaching. First, and foremost, I am a teacher—a passion for teaching animates everything I do.”

 

At Kenyon, Macionis teaches a number of courses, but his favorite class is Introduction to Sociology, which he offers every semester. He enjoys extensive contact with students and invites everyone enrolled in each of his classes to enjoy a home-cooked meal.

The Macionis family—John, Amy, and children McLean and Whitney—live on a farm in rural Ohio. In his free time, Macionis enjoys tennis, swimming, hiking, and playing oldies rock-and-roll (he recently released his first CD). Macionis is as an environmental activist in the Lake George region of New York’s Adirondack Mountains, working with a number of organizations, including the Lake George Land Conservancy, where he serves as president of the board of trustees.

bell hooks' insight is a gift to the world

Yearning is comprised of a series of essays, which identify, dissect, and communicate cultural politics with a focus on the world's lack of focus towards black women. Various overlooked and underrepresented groups in the media and world literature are given a voice too. Stereotypes and cultural ignorance is dealt with thoroughly. Not only does the author shoot down the upper-class white heterosexual male icon, she analyzes mentally, statistically and historically oppressed peoples own misgivings. All the while, the book is entertaining. bell hooks has a straight forward approach that forces one to look past his-story's rhetoric and recognize truths. hooks writes for those with a vocabulary, so if that's what you lack, grab Webster and learn a few words as you gain insight and recognition on cultural politics.

Hunter, published in 1990, centers on Hunter, thought to be somewhat alpha, part Native American security chief, and Jennifer Marist, thought to be somewhat prissy, geologist.

Man in Control, published in 2003, centers on DEA agent Alexander Tyrell Cobb & HR Assistant Jordana "Jodie" Clayburn. This story combines the typical "younger-sister's-best-friend's crush-on turned love-for, the older brother with a DEA investigation; add a dash of humor, family issues, esteem issues; then include ties to the Long, Tall Texans of Jacobsville Texas, and the Mercenaries, aka Soldiers of Fortune, and you have a story as only Diana Palmer can tell it. (One of my favorite DPs!!!)

Two classic Diana Palmer reprints, both are solid stories that are typically DP. These two are probably reprinted together because Hunter appears in Man in Control.

A great read...

This was my first Diana Palmer book purchase, and I was relieved to find that it partly made up for what I put in.

This book features two novels: HUNTER and MAN IN CONTROL, and I warn you against reading further unless you want spoilers.

HUNTER revolves around the love-hate relationship between Hunter, the half-Indian half-white security chief of Ritter Oil, and Jennifer, one of the company's top field geologists. Hunter wants Jennifer, physically, but he doesn't want to repeat his father's mistake. His father had married a white woman for love and had been deserted in the end, because she did not love him nor did she tolerate life on the reservation. Jennifer loves and wants only Hunter, but she hides these feelings when faced with his cruel remarks and open resentment. Hunter finally breaks it off with her, distancing himself by cruelly cutting her off and claiming that he plays this "game" with women to keep them from coming too close. It isn't until the end when he finally realizes that he does love her and goes after her.

MAN IN CONTROL revolves around a similar love-hate relationship between DEA agent Alexander Cobb and Ritter Oil secretary Jodie Clayburn, who has loved him since forever it seems. Jodie was orphaned just out of high school, and she considers Alex and Margie (Alex's sister and Jodie's best friend) her only family. However, this "family" continues to use her for their own purposes, walking all over Jodie like a doormat. When Jodie gets drunk at one of the Cobbs 'parties and tries to seduce Alexander, reminding the Cobbs of their mother, he throws a fit and refuses to let Margie invite her anymore. All of this is heard by Jodie, who resolves to get out of their lives and lead her own. This resolution is delayed when Alexander shows up and gains her cooperation in his undercover operation at Ritter Oil, where he must try to find the culprit responsible for using the company as a base of operations for drug smuggling. He mainly suspects Brody Vance, Jodie's supervisor and poses as Jodie's boyfriend, despite her resentment of being used once more. Yet it is Jodie who proves more useful than ever, catching the culprit and catching Alexander's heart.

HUNTER is a good read, but it's the second story, MAN IN CONTROL, that heavily influenced my rating for this book. I hope you enjoy MAN IN CONTROL as much as I did!

Hated Hunter-Liked Man in control

dp often has the scenario of older nasty hero and young naive heroine. Most of the time, the hero is redeemable sometime during the book. However, Hunter is just downright cruel through the whole book until the last few pages. Even in the love scenes, he's cruel. I couldn't believe a beautiful intelligent woman would continue to let herself be treated like that. It was hard to read because I had read "The Outsider" and Hunter is featured several times in this book and a likable good guy so thought reading his story would be fun but there wasn't anything fun about it. YIKES!
The redeeming part of this book was "Man in Control" and why 3 stars instead of one. He isn't nearly as mean and nasty and much more likeable early on. There is humor in this story and interesting that Alexander won't make love to Jodie until they are married. That was different then most of the other dp books.

A refreshing positive guide to creating a sustainable future

Having been a student of change theory and systems thinking for years I was attracted to Holonomics right away. Once I got into the read I got even more excited because this is not just another author expounding on how things should or could work. Simon and Maria are brilliant at introducing the significance of landmark points in the history of thought without coming from a place of authority and therefore robbing readers of their opportunity to experience the insight themselves. It is like they provide an honest and clear guided journey that when applied to one’s life or career opens doors to relationships that support true sustainability. This book won’t just sit on my shelf. It is already becoming dog-eared from consistent reference and revisiting of key concepts.
If you prefer causing change over just reading about it. This book is for you.

Holonomics can transform a@ three levels

There are many books claiming to be transformational. Most turn out to be a shallow 'how to' guide. Not Holonomics. It is a consistent analysis of how we can help transform ourselves, the communities and entities we are part of and ultimately the planet. The foundation of Holonomics is based on somewhat complex philosophical principles that normally could scare some people of applying the concept. Simon and Maria's ability to distill the core and apply it in practice though make the otherwise complex practical and very relevant, I was particularly fascinated by Goethe and the Theory of Colors and how Simon and Maria applied it.

As a senior executive in a global corporation I was indeed first skeptical about the concepts application to corporates but starting the personal journey that Holonomics offers is a way start grasping how it can apply to corporates.

Holonomics has to be lived and tried and luckily Simon and Maria has not only a website with great blogs but workshops and talks to further help people live Holonomics.

Filled with interesting speculations- absurdities or not

In one sense it is impossible to take seriously a book which tells us what the future five - hundred years from now is going to look like. The author Adrian Berry claims the more distant the future the more likely the predictions about it will be true. But I somehow relying on perhaps a more primitive sense, and a knowledge of the unpredictability of human history , tend to think otherwise.

So I regard this work as a work of speculation- and I read it for interesting ideas of which there are many.

Berry predicts that the future will among other things contain the following: " The ever -increasing growth of wealth, the storage of human personalities on computer disks for retrieval after death, that we may be succeeded by intelligent robots; the farming of the sea, the coming of another Ice Age, the colonization of the Moon, of Mars and of the asteroids; and ultimately the building of starships"

Notice that Berry sneaks in here one most important prediction as if it were just another item on the list i.e. the prediction about personalities being stored on computer- disks. This is a prediction, I personally think is nonsense as I believe that the idea of a 'personality' without a body is an absurdity.

Berry considers the five hundred years in two parts- one as to what will happen on earth, and the second as to what will happen extraterrestially. Berry makes the prediction that there will be colonies on Mars, on the Moon, on asteroids. He believes it will give Mankind ( or its successor robotic - intelligence) a security we do not have today i.e. if one point is wiped out there will be no problems with the others in the distance going on. He believes by the way that these space- colonization efforts will be done privately, and that in the distant future there will be no government and politicians. This prospect is apparently an important element in his optimism about the human future. But it too seems to me more wishful thinking than anything else. For my sense is that any organization and use of resources will require policy, collective decision, some form of goverment and leadership.

One interesting chapter , the second from the end, is on the question of whether we are alone in the universe or not. The "Where are they?" question of Fermi. He provides Sagan's arguments as to why there are most likely billions of intelligent creatures. But also provides information and argument of the critics who say that we have absolutely no sign that there is anyone intelligent out there.

Berry also seems to feel that once we are all scientifically enlightened there will be no 'religion' as we know it today.

As with so many of these speculations there is a certain 'thinness' in the whole picture of human life presented. The actual texture and feel of human life with all its passions and pains , is not in this kind of literature. For that we need to read books about the past, the truly great books of mankind- and not the lesser ones about the future.

Thought Provoking and Not Quite Sci-Fi

I was enjoying this book from the first chapter, where the author totally destroys the "greenhouse" effect from a purely scientific point of view. I was saying to myslef, 'hey, this guy is ok...'
Then, in chapter 2, he goes on to theorize that Jesus was not resurrected from the tomb, but was instead eaten by hungry dogs who were used to foraging for food among the recently departed. Oh boy. Did I finish the book, yes, and I read it with a bit more critical eye. In fact, I went back and re-read the first chapter. So, what does this past have to do with his observations of the next 500 years?
You'll have to read the book.
But, let me say that it was an enjoyable read, and I found his frequent validation of sci-fi writers ideas and theories, mixed in with pure sciece to be a fun way to have written the book.

The Power of the Pattern

I first read this book about 12 years ago and would rate it as one of the best reads of my life. Sure there sre elements of pure speculation that seem to be just science fiction, but then again how much of science fiction of just 20 years ago is now very much a normal part of our lives.
It is his use of the patterns though that is the most powerfully compelling aspect of the book - whether the patterns of poverty over the ages, or of financial dealings or of population movements or of agriculture or of warfare or of ....... It made me wake up and realise that the whole history of social planet Earth for the last 500 years is the diorama of the individual countries on Earth right now - the richest countries now were pretty unpleasant places back then, and that given the right conditions all countries now will follow a similar pattern.
I often refer to this book as "My Bible"

Don't Waste Your Time OR Money.

First, let me start off by saying this is a short story.
I wasn't paying attention when I purchased this book and I was VERY disappointed when the book ended so suddenly because their relationship was just beginning.
With that said, I think this story would be a good introduction for a full length novel (with some changing of a few details included).

On to the review... SPOILERS INCLUDED.
This novel seems rushed, unrealistic at some parts.

For example:
1. Anika was dead set on losing her virginity before she turned 30... for what purpose?
I didn't understand her sudden rush and her willingness to pick ANY man for the job.
Why did she have to be so desperate?
Her reasoning didn't match her desperation (2).

2. Anika's reasoning for wanting to lose her virginity didn't make any sense to me.
You're sick of being up tight so you decide the only way to loosen up is to give it up... to ANYBODY?
Loosen up by changing up your hair, or buy a freakum dress, or wax your vagina... do something different.
I just didn't understand why she went so drastic with it.

3. You're sick of being hurt and lied to by men so you decide to open your legs to any loser that steps to you?
Wouldn't being hurt and lied to cause you to keep your legs close even more?

4. Anika seemed to want to lose her virginity to someone who she would never and could never have feelings for; why didn't she contact one of her ex's?
I mean she wasn't looking for a relationship or a guy with standards; she wanted a booty call.
I think it may have been safer to hit up a guy you've dealt with in the past and have some sort of history with instead of some new d*ck.

5. She was supposed to be uptight and a girl that followed the rules, why would you risk your safety looking for random stray d*ck!?!
Was she not afraid of STDs?
I just found it weird that she was the uptight kind but didn't think twice about her health... condoms don't protect everything 100% of the time.

6. Anika was supposedly a diehard Sixer's fan; how come she didn't realize and recognize Travon's cousin Kwan in the club? Kwan was the rookie player for the Sixers (her favorite team) and she didn't realize who he was?
In my opinion, if you're a huge fan of any team, you track at least the main players and Kwan was one of them.
This wasn't a huge detail in the storyline but it rubbed me the wrong way.

The main thing that I HATED was that Treyvon (Trey) told her that he had very strong feelings for her and that he could fall in love with her and she was STILL trying to avoid him because she liked him too much???!
THAT DROVE ME CRAZY!
This man has been pursing you and being open and honest with you but you're scared to have a real relationship with him because you like him too much?
What woman in her right mind do you know would not try to pursue a relationship with a drop dead sexy, employed, funny, independent man that's crazy about you and that you've ALREADY SLEPT WITH?
I've never heard of that... never.

With all that said, I would not recommend this book because it's so incomplete in my eyes.
Like I stated earlier, I think this could be used as an introduction to a full length novel with a few changes and edits.
I would give it 0 stars, but I can't.

Not My Favorite

You can tell this was a book she wrote and forgot about and found on her computer. This was not as good as Ms. Daniels other books that I've read & I didn't enjoy this book at all. I haven't read the other book that she said this was kind of like and or will remind you of but I know this book was a disappointment.

You want to do what?

Normally I enjoy reading Angies books, but this one I just plain did not like. I mean why on earth would a person go trolling in a club to find a man to help her lose her viginity? That was just too creepy for words. Then,the main character sets her sights on a man or should I say boy that's even "Greener" then she is. When that doesn't work, she ends up with his cousin or self appointed bodyguard. I think this story was just too rushed and just ended too quickly. The author must had to pull something out quickly in order to meet a deadline. My advice use your money for another one of her other books. This one just wasn't worth the money, the time or the download.

Una obra práctica para el día a día

Este libro logra bajar los conceptos de coaching a la gestión diaria. Las guías prácticas para la conversación de coaching son excelentes ya que permiten estructurar las conversaciones de forma ordenada. Los ejemplos de conversaciones son muy buenos y los recursos web también.
He asistido a cursos de coaching varios y siempre me quedó la sensación de que no trenía forma de aplicar en la práctica lo aprendido. Este libro es ameno, práctico y consistente. Lo recomiendo ampliamente.

Driving Phobia GONE!

My SEVERE driving phobia came on, out of the blue, just over 2 years ago (after driving fine for many years). Bridges, overpasses, elevated areas, and sharp curves caused me the most problems. After the first few months of trying without any success I just gave up. I lost all my freedom and felt completely worthless and useless. After two years of feeling like a prisoner in my own home I decided enough was enough and started searching for help. I sure wasted a whole LOT of time and money along the way but I finally landed here on this book. Hope whoever is reading this review has found it early in your search because this it's really all you need if you have a strong will to succeed.

I couldn't drive anywhere really. The horrific and paralyzing fear was just too great. I purchased this book two months ago and started practicing immediately after hurriedly (but thoroughly) reading it all the way through and following his suggestions to the letter. Now here I am, two months later, about to take off on a 500 mile trip to see my daughter and I’m completely calm and confident.
YOU CAN DO THIS!! It will NOT be easy, no, not at all but please KNOW you can! When that day of freedom finally comes you will be beyond glad, you will be and feel many wonderful things.

Important Note: I temporarily developed generalized anxiety while practicing as my nerves were raw. Not realizing what was going on I thought something horrible must be wrong with me and I nearly quit shortly after I started. I later learned about being extremely sensitized, that it was normal in the first few weeks, and that it would pass. I really didn’t believe it would pass but it did. I used the techniques from Hope and Help for Your Nerves by Claire Weekes to get through the generalized anxiety while practicing to overcome the driving phobia. I highly recommend you have it in your arsenal before starting out on your road to recovery and freedom. It’s very old school. You just have to chuckle and look past that. She did mention using medication but you don’t need it. If you’re like me, you think you need it, you think it’s the only answer, but it’s not and it would be another thing you would have to work through later so why do that to yourself. So thankful I didn’t.

My first recommendation to anyone suffering with panic disorder/attacks/anxiety

This book single-handedly got me on my road to recovering from Panic disorder (Couldn't leave the house, couldn't be alone, couldn't drive alone, especially highways or far from home, etc.)

As a man, you feel castrated when hit with Panic disorder. All the things you used to do, used to love to do, and still want to do (like going for a hike, camping, taking a day-drive to the beach, driving to the country, even going to the store!) felt impossible for me. It was extremely saddening and depressing. Then, I got this book.

This book helped me just as much as therapy did. I only wanted to take medicine/anti-depressants as a last resort; and I never had to.

I can now drive on my own no problem and simply function! I don't wake up every day being reminded what I can't do. I haven't flown alone yet since this happened, but the idea doesn't scare me nearly as much as when I started. I am completely over "being alone", can drive with zero problem, even far from home, take elevators (with other people... I just hate those things ha), and feel virtually "cured." "Cure" is a bad word for anxiety sufferers, but I'll just say, I trust myself to handle panic attacks in the future. I can get through them, I always have. Future me is always ready for them.

Watching the authors videos on his website helped put a face to the words in the book, which as the other reviewers noted feels like he's sitting right next to you. I was literally saying "holy crap" every other page in this book at how exact he was describing what I was going through.

Combine this book with therapy, just so you have some accountability on what thoughts you're internalizing without realizing it, EXERCISE, and taking some vitamins, and you will be very surprised.

Simply life-changing...THANK YOU to the author!!!!!

I have never written a review for Amazon, though I have been a customer for years. This book has made me break my silence. It has transformed my life, seemingly overnight. I began having panic attacks about 3 months ago and they had reached the point of becoming debilitating. I was avoiding elevators, planes, crowds, even the grocery store. My husband wanted to take me on a (flying) trip to NYC, and I thought I would pass out at the thought of it. I sought a counselor specializing in panic disorder, and she felt sure that I could "self treat" my panic. So I sought out this book. I had barely finished this book when our NYC trip was upon us. The night before the trip I nearly backed out. The anticipatory anxiety was a nightmare. But I put full faith in the principles of this book, barely slept, and rose to get ready for our 6 am flight. I could not eat, I could barely talk, I was so anxious...until the plane took off. Then it was gone. It was like a miracle. I am still in shock at how simple it is to face down a Goliath like panic disorder and win. The trip to NYC, full of elevators, subway rides, and crowds, was actually...yes, FUN! I felt like a new woman, empowered to take back my life. Now when an airplane flies over, instead of saying to myself," I'm glad I'm not on that", I smile, and say to myself," Wow, I wonder what adventure they're off to?!". GET GET GET this book if you have ANY issue with panic attacks, claustrophobia, flying, public speaking, etc. It has been the best money I have ever spent on Amazon, hands down.
