Nice, Easy Read

This is an excellent book that takes an extremely complicated profession and simplifies it into 37 easy-to-read pages. I'd recommend this book for anyone new to the commercial lending arena or any small business owners that want to get an inside view of how bankers (should) think when evaluating any new credit requests. Mr. Hodge does an excellent job of providing background information for borrowers and entrepreneurs who are often times caught on the outside looking in without much undertanding of the "process" because they 1) have never made an application for a commercial loan; or 2) never had a competent commercial banker like Mr. Hodge to properly explain the "process" to them.

An excellent primer on "real" small business financing

I recently took a position doing business development work for a commercial lending/crowdlending platform and I wanted a useful and readable guide to the business from a true, knowledgeable veteran. Malcolm Hodge's book is a great overview of the small business financing world. He uses his experience and knowledge to present many of the issues that arise in the small business lending environment. A great, concise read that I will be referencing many times in the future. There is more wisdom in these pages than in many technical treatments of the subject. A valuable and necessary resource.

Mr. Hodge takes your hand and walks you through the small business commercial lending club, and I am thankful for that. As an accountant it is refreshing to hear sound financial principles being used to explain the intricacies of small business commercial lending practice. Many Japanese, therefore, became receptive to new ideas about the causes of earthquakes as well as to the notion that by observing some phenomena―for example, the behavior of catfish―one might determine when an earthquake would strike. All subsequent major earthquakes in Japan resulted in claims, always made after the fact, that certain phenomena had been signs of the impending catastrophe. Indeed, earthquake prediction in Japan from 1855 to the present has largely consisted of amassing collections of alleged or possible precursor phenomena. In addition, the Ansei Edo earthquake served as a catalyst accelerating socio-political trends already underway. It revealed bakufu military weaknesses and enhanced the prestige of the imperial deity Amaterasu at the expense of the bakufu deity Kashima.

A very thorough and well documented history of one of the two most recent massive earthquakes to strike the Kanto (Tokyo) region of Japan. In addition a lot of additional material about some of the other major historic earthquakes to strike Japan. The author draws some parallels with the Great East Japan earthquake of 2011 and clearly identifies equally massive earthquakes and tsunami which preceded the 2011 temblor and which should have served to forward TEPCO of what they could expect for their reactors in Fukushima and what they should have been prepared for.

At times a bit repetitious but on the whole well worth the time spent to read it.

I enjoyed this course very much! The speaker, Professor Gregory Aldrete, kept my interest the entire series AND he paints a picture of battles that places the listener in the middle of the action. As a history enthusiast, it was like picking up an exciting novel of battles fought long ago and finding clues from their mistakes.

I also liked another course done by him which gave loads of content on decisive battles and this is why I decided to listen to History's Great Military Blunders and I was not disappointed. His unique style of setting the scene of these epic clashes kept me listening and wanting to know more and more after each battle.

An easy tale

This is a series of courses, or rather battles, 24 of them in all. The focus is entirely on the persons and actions, leaving out all relevant background information like economy, weapon technology and social issues. I guess this is necessary given the scope of the text, but the result is a slightly light and easy narrative with limited academic feel. That is ok per se, but the narrator’s reading style doesn’t function for me. Professor Aldrete accentuates every third word. It seems to me that he is reading to some weak-minded teenagers with limited attention span and no pre-knowledge of the topics at stake.
This observation is highly subjective and should not put anybody off giving these courses a try. The narrative is dramatic and interesting and the battles depicted often proved to be decisive.

Not that it's pretentious or anything...

Just wanted to say that I think this book is great, a pretty in depth look into the genre, specifically when you consider it's only 130 pages. I like that the author address the socio-political influences of the genre, in particular bring up comparisons to Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto and Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection. What I didn't care for is the author's verbose use of language. It reads very slowly, as one practically needs a dictionary to decipher what the author is saying. Just be warned that this is far from light reading on the horror genre.
