Better to read one helpful, entertaining book than ten boring fun-killers

There is undoubtedly of plethora of well-intentioned books published in the last few years attempting to encompass and explicate the rise, prominence and development of Japanese horror films. Lord knows I've read far more than my fair share of them. I've reviewed a few here on SaruDama but the vast majority are still stacked in the corner of my room somewhere.

In my experience and if truth be told, seldom have I sat down to read a book on Japanese film genre and found it a page turner. By far and away, most of them, including the widely touted ones, amounted to reading an encyclopedia (ZZzzz..) or the stodgy biography of some person I was once interested in but whose life now appeared as boring as hell. So there they are, stacked in the corner, a dusty monument to misplaced enthusiasm.

Despite that tragic history, I am rather energized and confident in bringing to your attention Jim Harper's Flowers From Hell: The modern Japanese film. This was in fact a very fun read, not only in terms of Harper's clear and readable writing style but also due to the rather impressive amount of content he covers. Regardless of one's degree of exposure to Japanese horror films, the search for souls who can tell us more never ceases. But no one is interested (for long) in disseminaters of static, disjointed facts. Undoubtedly, fans of the visual and emotional medium of film are cognitively attuned to a more coherent, narrative-like whole. I truly prefer such writers and find Harper among that group.

Wisely enough, even at first impression Flowers distinguishes itself by intentionally conveying the experience of Japanese film rather than a mere knowledge of it. The book's odd dimensions, glossy cover and sleek profile will rightfully cause organized book lovers to place this in their ART section alongside other similarly dimensioned and glossied volumes. And with its 33-page section of high-glossy color prints of stunning and shocking film posters, I can think of no better place.

Personally speaking, I truly enjoyed and recommend this book. It has earned a place on my bookshelf rather than atop the dusty pile of its boring competitors. If you are somewhat new to Japanese Horror and don't want to kill your fervor by picking up a long-winded, say-nothing resource, I strongly encourage you to choose this. And for you pickled zombie veterans, I thoroughly believe Harper's writing style and depth of investigation will be a gherkin-mover.

Für Preis, Inhalt, Kompaktheit und schöne Lesbarkeit ist dieser Band wunderbar. Deutschlernende (wie ich) sollten auch darauf aufmerksam sein, dass "Gesammelte Werke" nicht "Collected Works" oder "Sämtliche Werke" heisst, sondern "Selected Works." Dieser Band ist eher einem "Portable" Band Penquins ähnlich. Wenn Sie ein spezivisches Werk Zweigs suchen, sollten Sie das Inhaltsverzeichniss überprüfen. Im Fall dieses Bandes liegt Zweigs Meisterstück, "Ungeduld des Herzens" nicht drin.

I have yet to read much of this. Regardless, the film,"The Grand Budapest Hotel" was based on Zweig's writing. He was a truly great author of Jewish extraction at the wrong time. He and his wife committed suicide together to avoid falling under the Nazi regime just before the WWII ended. His writing is witty, oblique in a Viennese way, funny and wise.

For intermediate traders

The better I get at making money trading, (not investing), the more these good books show up. (When the student is ready, the teacher will appear). I have read dozens of books over the years like all of you,and most of them did nothing for me except help me part with my money. I would get discouraged and quit the game for a few weeks or a couple of months but love of the game kept bringing me back. And when I picked up books like this one, some years ago, it didn't interest me. Know why? I wasn't ready for it. The reason it interests me now is because through many losses and trial and error, I am finding my way through this trading game and I find myself doing most of the right things now and when I read a book like this one, it confirms it! When I was a novice and not doing the right things, this book didn't confirm it, hence, it didn't appeal to me. I guess what I'm saying is, if your not improving at the trading game, then perhaps you're not ready for this book. If you are, you will be pleased to see yourself on many of the pages, but better yet, the confirmation you'll get from the book will increase your confidence and you just have to make more money. Maybe if you're not doing well and read this book, it will help you, too. All I know is when I was losing every day, I kept reading all the hype in the day trading books, losing money and this book didn't appeal to me. Now I have patience and discipline and sleep better and make money. This book has helped me make more as a position/swing trader of stocks only. Just keep in mind the 4 cardinal rules of trading: 1. Trade the trend, 2. Cut your losses quickly, 3. Let your profits run to infinity, and 4. Manage your risk. And when you learn that managing your risk partly involves losing money properly, then losing money won't bother you anymore. Read and reread this book and perhaps you too can trade the market for a living. And you know what? The markets are crashing and I'm still making money. I'm not sure if I would if I hadn't read the book.

Outstanding! You shouldnt miss this!

The book began with the author's recall of the suicide of his bond trader friend who lost about US$60K in one single Friday in 1982. Quite a sad story, but it did tell how serious the author was about trading and his sincerity of writing a good book that attempted to help traders and those aspiring ones. In my opinion, he did a very good job.

With fifty chapters of individual trading rules (one can refer to the sample page on Amazon.com), the author had discussed, with abundant real life samples, and without nonsense, most of the essential trading rules that I had read here and there in other trading books and had personally experienced, though not effectively put into practice. One might had already read a lot of trading books. I did. However, this one was so well written and organised that I would like to recommend it to anybody who wants to buy a book for easy reference to keep himself/herself well guarded against the ups and downs of trading life.

S.O.R. Losers is a good read for all!

S.O.R. Losers is a humorous book about a group of intelligent and talented, but non-athletic, seventh grade boys who are required to participate on a soccer team at their sports-minded school. The boys on the losing team are viewed by parents and school administration as rebellious and are frowned upon because of their "bad" attitudes. What's wrong with accepting the fact that you stink at sports anyway? Avi portrays realistic characters and a humorous style of writing in this book, making it a good read for all ages! (And for those curious Avi fans, you'll find his last name spelled backwards in this book!)

Want to teach the concept of imagery and simile to your students with fun and laughter? Then, this is the book for you. Avi creates loveable characters we can all identify with, no matter our age. When the "royal" blue jerseys of the "Buckingham" team appear on the well-groomed soccer field, the reader has a good idea as to what will happen to the S.O.R. 7th grade misfits dressed in red and yellow clown colors! But, will this rag-tag team ever win a game?

Have you ever been forced to playa sport? If so S.O. R Loser by Avi is the perfect book for you. A young man named Sitrow loves school but hates sports. he has to see his way through playing soccer. The kid named Sitrow was going to pick a sport for the school team but he missed baseball, basketball, tennis and football. The only thing is left is soccer. The only thing he hates about the school rules are that you must play one sport a year. His coach Mr. Lesster (also the social studies the teachers) push the team through their unlucky year.
Their parents are behind them all the way.
They had practice a couple days later. They really needed help. They could not even score on their own goal. When Sitrow gets home he starts complaining at dinner about how stupid that soccer is. The parents don't care they think that some exercise is good for the smart young man. The next day when he enters his 8th period which is Social Studies and which Mr. Lesster is the teacher. Mr. lesster announces that they are going out side to practice soccer.
They had a practice, a week from that day and their 1st game and it was bad 32-0. The coach was mad but he knew that it was only the first game. The next 4 games they lost. Now he whole school was cheering for them to win. The principal was telling them that the soccer team never lost. Will they keep losing or will the come back and be victorious.
