very inspirational book

I love this book! Well done and very inspirational, just like you'd expect from Jim Rohn. I recently started reviewing a lot of this material and this is one of my favorites. Had the pleasure of seeing him a few years ago, before his death, and the same motivating spirit that he gave in his live talks is here. If you have enjoyed him live, you will love this. It's a wonderful example of his legacy to self-development.

Lessons on Life by Jim Rohn

The reason for the one star is that I believe the book is a rip off. I have been a Jim Rohn fan since April 13, 1994. I have attended several of his seminars and I have four cassette tape seminars that he was selling back then plus I have all of his books. This is basically a booklet of quotes from those seminars. Each page contains art work with one of his quotes. If you have his book "The Treasury of Quotes" you don't need this book. Of course if you like pictures of trees, water, people, childern turning flips and of the sun setting you may like it. The book also contains a DVD as a bonus.

Good information from a master just not a lot of it. Only one thought to a page & then not on every page. Not my idea of a book. more like a collection of good sayings. They have meaning and valuable messages but whole book could have been written on ten pages.

This is certainly the most thorough of the English-language biographies of Johannes Brahms. MacDonald relates all known facts about the composer, his relationship with friends and acquaintances, and his music. Biography and creative output are interwoven throughout the book, as the author rather laboriously discusses each composition in chronological order. It is assumed that the reader has a fair knowledge of Brahms's works and can read music, for MacDonald includes 68 musical examples that are important to the discussion. MacDonald's verbose style may put off the casual reader, but for a real Brahms lover, the book is a treat.

MacDonald's Brahms

A colleague of mine noticed the picture of the young Brahms on the cover of MacDonald's biography. She remarked with surprise on his handsome, vigorous appearance. Too often people tend to think of Brahms as an old, bearded, somewhat overweight composer of conservative romantic music. The text of MacDonald's ambitious study, together with the cover portrait, aims to dispel stereotypes held by many about Brahms. For MacDonald, Johannes Brahms (1833 --1897) was an unabashedly romantic composer (granting the difficulties of defining that notoriously difficult term, "romantic"), with strong ties to the musical past who looked forward to and helped create the linear, contrapuntal, and decidedly unromantic music of the twentieth century. MacDonald's interest in the relationship between Brahms and Schoenberg is understandable as he has written a companion volume on Schoenberg for the "Master Musicians" series.

The book is both a biography of Brahms and a musical study with heavy emphasis on the latter. In the biographical sections of his account, MacDonald covers briefly Brahms's childhood in the rough, seafaring districts of Hamburg,his early musical instruction, and his wide reading. He describes Brahms's relationship with the Schumann's and the ambiguities of his lifelong love for Clara Schumann. There is a great deal of emphasis on Brahms's inability to marry, despite several flames in his youth. MacDonald describes how love and passion inform Brahms's work throughout and how music helped Brahms give voice to feelings that, for whatever reason, he could not express in his life.

MacDonald also places Brahms in a musical context that includes his extensive study of his predecessors, from his contemporaries through Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn, to the baroque and earlier. Brahms was undoubtedly the most musically learned of the great composers and he was able to integrate his learning with his own romantic voice. MacDonald finds that Brahms remained throughout his life a romantic composer. This means, I think, that Brahms saw music as an essentially spiritual calling, somewhat of a substitute for the role revealed religion plays in the lives of many, which emphasizes romantic and physical love, the unity of man with nature, and the value of the past. Bach used the past in his devotion to early music and to folksongs of many types. Brahms's romanticism, and the manner in which he integrated it with counterpoint and variation, paved the way for the destruction of romanticism and for the creation of a more recognizably modern sensibility.

I found the most valuable part of MacDonald's book to be the detailed analyses he offers of virtually all Brahm's major works. The discussion is presented chronologically. The musical discussions generally follow the biographical sections of the book and deal with Brahms's compositions by categories: orchestral music, chamber music, choral music, piano, song. MacDonald offers numerous musical examples, discusses the history of each work, and integrates each work nicely into a discussion of the entirety of Brahms's output.

Reading this book impressed upon me the wide variety of masterpieces Brahms composed during his life. MacDonald's accounts can be followed by the nonspecialist and give an inspiring picture of Brahms and his music. While reading, I thought of the works of Brahms with which I am familiar and wanted to revisit them in light of MacDonald's discussion. I also thought of the many works of Brahms I don't know but would love to explore in light of what I learned from the book. Little more can be asked from a musical study.

MacDonald writes with a deep affection for Brahms which he conveys well to his readers. He writes that Brahms "has been my favorite composer ever since I was old enough to think about music" (at x) and it shows in the deep thought and work represented in this study. MacDonald's closing discussion of Brahms's output captures well his view of Brahms. He writes: "Aware of the tragedies, paradoxes, and imponderables of existence, Brahms wrote to provide sustenance for the here and now. His music seeks to give beauty, nobility, a sense of meaning to the brute fact of human transience." (p. 401)

This is an outstanding study which should inspire the reader to hear Brahms, or to rehear him with an awakened heart.

MacDonald's "Brahms" is informative yet analitically lacking

MacDonald's biography of Brahms is insightful and informative benefiting from findings in recent Brahms scholarship as well as from the authors command of language and knowledge of the art of music. Its only fault, albeit a rather prominent one, is the author's need to comment at least a few words on every work of Brahms's. This becomes tedious and the reader is left with a feeling of unsatisfied curiosity as if he or she is reading program notes to a concert he will not hear. MacDonald, however, reserves his more detailed accounts for Brahms's more important and popular major works (his all too brief analysis of the Fourth Symphony leaves one wishing he would write a book entirely devoted to that masterpiece) a trait which reveals the author's keen analytical mind. The book would have benefited greatly if the author had devoted space given to smaller or less significant pieces to a more extensive discussion of the composers major works

About the Author
(Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley) is Gerhard Helbig Professor of German as a Foreign Language and Applied Linguistics at the University of Leipzig and President of the Institute for Test Research and Test Development in Leipzig, Germany. Before joining the University of Leipzig, he taught at the University of Iowa, Iowa City (1990-1998) and at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1988–1990). His main research areas are: second language acquisition, corpus linguistics, language testing and assessment, and language policy. He is (co-) author of over 150 books, book chapters, and journal articles. He has extensive experience in test research and development for all language modalities (speaking, listening, writing, and reading). He has been a certified ACTFL OPI tester since 1989 and tester trainer since 1993. He has been a major contributor to the internationalization efforts of the University of Leipzig, establishing and directing joint BA, MA, and Ph.D. programs with universities in the Netherlands, Mexico, Brazil, and the U.S.

About the Author

Angus previously worked as a Curator of Weapons at the Royal Armouries, Tower of London, and Chief Curator of the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum. He now devotes himself to full-time writing, indulging his passion for maritime and naval history to the maximum.

After earning his Wings and Commission, Harper graduated from B-26 Transition School and B-24 Transition School. He was rated First Pilot/Aircraft Commander in the B-26, B-25, B-24 and B-17. He also flew the P-40, and flew over 100 missions as pilot of the P-63 and RP-63 in the “Pinball” Program. The RP-63 was an armored version of the P-63, and was used as a target airplane in the training of Aerial Gunners. These “Pinball” missions were flown at great risk to the pilot.

He was discharged from the Army in December, 1945 and did not pilot another airplane until 1998 – 53 years between flights – when he was invited to join the Confederate (now Commemorative) Air Force. At age 91 he now flies the AT-6, the BT-13 and the PT-19 for the CAF. He also flew the N3N, the T-34, the T-28, the Jet Provost, and he was the pilot of the only flying Curtis SB2C Helldiver in the world. He still flies in several Air Shows each year.

Harper had a career of more than fortyfive years in the oil business as an engineer, a senior officer of a major corporation, and owner of a petroleum consulting corporation.

Harper and his wife Nell live in Houston, Texas. They have a son, a daughter and three grandsons.

Marvelous narrative

Captures the trials and tribulations of pilot training - the technology has changed but not the essence of the transformation from civilian to soldier and aviator. A pleasure to read and absorb, Harper shacks the target.

Exciting and thought-provoking

What a beautiful book.

As someone who has been very skeptical but also quite curious about Astrology, I realized I needed good reading material for a complex and confusing subject. In a sea of books with poor writing, grand assumptions, and a lack of self-evaluation I found Robert Hand's writing exquisite in its ability to connect with the reader and yet hauntingly beautiful in the sense that there are a lot of wise things said in this book. Though this is geared toward astrology and reading the birth chart, etc. the language and message of the words provided here could become valuable knowledge to anyone, even if you aren't drawn to the art of astrology.

I enjoy the non fatalistic approach. Too often I have found even the most 'modern' or contemporary astrologers to rely too much on the idea of fate or literalism in the horoscope, so much so that it becomes a detriment to the reader and the read. I enjoy the fact that Robert Hand sees the horoscope as a symbol. He suggests that one should not look to planets as being literal people or situations but, in a way, energy. He reminds of the fact that we are powerful as individuals, and that reality itself is quite subjective. He doesn't make grandiose claims of God or religion, and seems to be quite aware of society as a whole and the influence of culture vs. hereditary needs, so on and so forth.

I don't want to spoil this book too much. However, as someone who is usually thrown off by mysticism, fatalism, and throwing the life into the hands of invisible deities, I enjoyed the humanistic wisdom of this interesting man. It hasn't changed my personal opinion of astrology, but I do feel that maybe, if employed in a manner similar to Mr. Hand, where the horoscope does not define or determine the person but the person defines the horoscope, we can maybe achieve greater unity in our lives. Our world is severely lacking in voices which reach us on a human, individual level, and yet I feel profoundly moved and touched by Mr. Hand's insight. Lovely.

Excellent book

This book is a lucid, broad, and enjoyable introduction to astrology written by the man who is arguably today's most authoritative expert. The technical aspects of the field are discussed with the right amount of detail for those interested in more than a superficial treatment, but who don't necessarily want to become professionals. Although I'm sure even professionals will find interesting new insights. And the discussion of the symbolic aspects of astrology is rich and nuanced - the antidote for what one would find online or in the pop-astrology section of the bookstore. I highly recommend this book.

Extremely Well Thought Out and Well Written

This is a typical Robert Hand book. There is nothing film flam about it. Robert has decisive views about most things and is not afraid to say so. He is also humble enough to say that his views may or may not change with further advancements in the field of Astrology (The number of astrologers who change their views and are willing to admit that openly can be counted on one's finger tips).

Robert has an excellent understanding of the basics of Astrology and it is no wonder that he is a pre-eminent Astrologer of our day and age. He is also gifted with great writing skill. He communicates his very well thought out ideas in a very easy to understand form. Robert is as comfortable with the technical aspects of Astrology as with the non-techincial (Psychological, etc). And he is able to marry the two very well with his scholarship. This is evident throughout the book where he not only elucidates various technical points very clearly but also the underlying Psychological meanings.

Personally for me, I came across this volume a bit later after I started studying Astrology. And so I had read several introductory texts prior to this book and so as a bit skeptical as to what this book could add to my knowledge. But all my doubts were dispelled after reading the preface itself. I can confidently say that this is the best works I have read on introductory astrology. And given that it was written in the 1980's, this is a testament to the quality of the ideas and expression.

The fact that Robert is a skilled practitioner of Astrologer comes out through the myriad of observations he makes in the book. The beauty of this book is that when one reads any part of it one gets a very clear understanding of what that thing is and what it is not. This cannot be said about most books of astrology where everything can be everything and anything can be anything. Several times one reads a book and wonders what is it exactly that one learnt. Not here. Robert is confident of his scholarship, his work and his thought process and his brave enough to call a spade a spade.

Once I read this book, I went and purchased most of Robert's other works and he is a key teacher for me in my quest to learn this wonderful subject.
