About the Author
"Russ Hibbeler "graduated from the University of Illinois-Urbana with a B.S. in Civil Engineering (major in structures) and an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University. Hibbeler's professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, Sargent and Lundy, Tucson. He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana. He has taught at the University of Illinois-Urbana, Youngstown State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College. Hibbeler currently teaches at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Yes, please!

I LOVE Hibbeler's Statics. I do not like his other books.

Statics is one of those that typically comes straight after one has taken a basic linear algebra course, and said student is probably in the midst of either an electromagnetics physics course (good for learning about those vector properties!) or a physics course focusing on optics/waves (great for getting more practice with trigonometry!). There's probably a bit of overlap, and the fundamental idea of Statics (namely that the sum of forces go to zero since nothing is moving and everything balances itself out) is such a simple one that as the book progresses one feels more confident in one's ability to do the problems.

Indeed, because make no mistake. This is first and foremost a hardcover workbook--legends say there are more problems in a Hibbeler textbook than there are atoms in the universe! And that's just in the first chapter!

And Hibbeler excels in giving you problems, too. You're not regurgitating the same problem with an extra load bearer or with a roller instead of a rocker for support. No, you are given I'm pretty sure every possible problem you could ever expect to need to thoroughly examine any structure you want. And his examples, oh, wow, he couldn't be more descriptive if he tried, and he's very clear on emphasizing the section's learning objectives in each so you actually can tackle all those varying problems of his. Typically, a student goes "I can do this type of problem, but show me this other type and I just can't." That doesn't feel an issue here, and problems flow nicely from simple to hair-pulling difficult.

And because the underlying nature of Statics isn't a difficult one, not only is this perfect for self-study, but it's also perfect for getting in shape for an FE exam.

Not a very good textbook in my opinion. Hibbeler solves problems in the most difficult way possible when my professor makes them so much easier. Doesn't do a great job at explaining example problems either.

About the Author
Steve joined Brighton from the University of Liverpool where he was part of the management group of Impacts 08, the research programme designed to assess the social, cultural and economic impacts of European Capital of Culture. Perhaps the most bizarre experience of his academic career was presenting the proposal for Impacts 08 to a panel chaired by Loyd Grossman.

Steve previously worked at Northumbria University where he was Head of Research for the Centre for Cultural Policy and Management and where he conducted a large-scale research project into the impact of cultural investment on Newcastle Gateshead Quayside. Many years previously Steve undertook his PhD in the Behavioural Sciences Department at the University of Huddersfield in which he was concerned with the relationship between consumption and identity amongst young people.

When I saw an email from Milestone telling me that their CEO had published a book, I quickly grabbed the Kindle version. As an employee of a busy security integrator, I work with Milestone frequently. Milestone has proven to be an excellent product for our customers, and the company has been incredibly successful. I've been very curious as to the story behind the company, and this book satisfied. Lars tells the story in a very conversational manner, weaving his own story effectively into the saga of Milestone. From the Scandinavian management model, to why Milestone is an open platform, to the acquisition by Canon, he covers it all. I highly recommend this book not only to people in the physical security industry, but to anyone involved in tech startups. It is a quick, fun read.

Always enjoyable to hear theory put into practice. Nice to hear from a Scandinavian view of the world. This is an easy read because it's concise, well - written, and nicely structured. They are innovating to disrupt an industry, and the insights on their path towards the IPO process and acquisition also offered interesting interesting insights. I felt tired just reading it... Their Open stance towards partnering will serve them well. This isn't the easiest path, but the one that will serve them best in the long run.

I scowled all the way through the book

Normally, I don't review books because I tend to agree to at least one review that's already been written. But, I HAD to review this time. I've just discovered Michelle Reid books and have enjoyed the handful I've read so far, but this one was a disappointment. The Hero was an ass and a bully and the heroine let her horniness overrule her brain EVERY TIME. Every time she got fed up and decided to leave him for good, I cheered her on because I knew it would make him really examine his behavior. And every time he would bully or sexually manipulate her into giving him to him and I would groan and roll my eyes. By the time the end rolled around and resolutions were happening, I was so over everything, I didn't care. I'll read more Michelle Reid books because I've seen how awesome they can be, but I'm glad this wasn't the first book of hers that I read.

Disappointing after promising start

This began with a great premise and with a thought-provoking set of problems to be overcome, in a man who can't say no to his ex and a demanding jealous daughter treating our heroine with disdain.
About a third of the way through, I disliked the male protagonist so much that I was waiting for the real hero to be introduced - Roberta (our heroine) deserved better. Sigh...There was no other hero, I had to stick with the disagreeable, smug, bullying, leading man and a heroine who, although perfectly justified in her demands, was *tasered* into submission by his kisses every time she was confrontational, so we never got a reasoned discussion from the hero about the problems, just his smug superior "I-know-how-this-novel-ends" attitude.
I was really disappointed in the outcome, and the grovelling should have been accompanied by some serious suffering by the hero for the novel to have truly been redeemed in my eyes.
However, that said, I DID finish the novel, it was very well written, and a very realistic dilemma, but oh, for me it missed by a smidgeon being a great read, just because that hero was such a furniture-throwing jerk, and the heroine such a pushover for love.

i loved this book , it is another great story by MR. the only thing i didn't like was when he grabbed her neck to hurt her because of his daughter's lies. the H knew his daughter had lied before . i highly recommend this book . i have read it many times .

WAY too many perfect errors

There are 60+ perfect errors in Part One, Grammar & Sentence Structure, plus this whopper-blooper under Tense Use: Past + Past Perfect: 'She went to lunch after she had finished the filing' which is merely wrong, but then comes this by way of explanation: 'the action that occurred first is more in the past', which is pretty much the way of the world. Things that happen first are almost always 'more in the past', but that does NOT help explain how the past perfect works. There are only a dozen such errors in Part Two, Correspondence.

On the good side is that this handbook contains a wealth of good information on the way business works. If Barron's would just stick to business and leave grammar to those who understand it, the world would be a better place. More good news is that you can get some practice in seeing if you can detect the perfect errors. (I tried to find Andrea Geffner to run this past her first but I was unsuccessful.)

Highly recommend for an early childhood class room.

I was looking for a book about magnets for my prek3 class. I found only informational text until I saw Magnet Max on Amazon. My kids really love this book! They all sit in silence while I read it. I think it really relates to a child's first interaction with magnets. They think it is magic! I would highly recommend this book, especially if you are doing lessons on magnets. Good, colorful illustrations as well. Just right for 3-5 year olds.

About the Author

Cheng Zhong is an associate professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Tianjin University. Prior to joining the faculty at Tianjin University, he worked as an associate professor in the State Key Laboratory of Metal Matrix Composites in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He earned his BSc and PhD in Materials Science from Fudan University in 2004 and 2009, respectively. Dr. Zhong’s recent research interests focus on the development of electrochemical metallurgy methods for preparing micro/nanostructured materials for electrochemical and electrocatalysis applications.

Yida Deng is a professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Tianjin University. He earned his PhD from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2006. Dr. Deng’s research interests include metal and metal oxide nanostructures for electrochemical and energy applications.

Wenbin Hu is a professor and dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Tianjin University. Previously, he worked as a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He holds a BSc and PhD from Central-South University and an MSc from Tianjin University. Dr. Hu is a member of the Expert Group on Advanced Structural and Composite Materials in the new materials field of China’s 863 Program (National High-Tech Research and Development Program). He received the support of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China in 2011. Dr. Hu’s research interests focus on advanced micro/nanomaterials for energy storage and conversion.

Daoming Sun is chief technology officer at LiCeram Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. He earned his PhD in physical electronics from Fudan University and holds a bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering from Xi’an University of Technology. His research focuses on the development of materials for electrochemical environmental sensors. Dr. Sun worked as a team leader at LiCeram, and he has successfully developed a novel high-sensitive sensor series that detects the time of wetness and corrosion current for the corrosion evaluation of metal.

Xiaopeng Han is currently a lecturer in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Tianjin University. He earned his BSc in chemical engineering and technology from Tianjin University in 2010 and received his PhD in material physics and chemistry from Nankai University in 2015, respectively. Dr. Han’s research interests focus on functional materials with micro/nanostructures for oxygen electrocatalysis and metal-air batteries.

Jinli Qiao is a professor, PhD supervisor, and scientific core-competency leader at Donghua University. She earned her PhD in electrochemistry from Yamaguchi University in 2004 before joining Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology as a research scientist. From 2004 to 2008, Dr. Qiao carried out seven fuel cell projects including two New Energy and Industrial Technology Development projects in Japan. From 2008 to the present, she carried out a total of 12 projects funded by the Chinese government. Dr. Qiao has 20+ years of scientific research experience, particularly in the areas of electrochemical material development and energy storage and conversion.

Jiujun Zhang is a principal research officer at the National Research Council of Canada, and a fellow of the International Society of Electrochemistry. He earned his BSc and MSc from Peking University and his PhD from Wuhan University, and carried out three terms of postdoctoral research at the California Institute of Technology, York University, and the University of British Columbia. Dr. Zhang holds more than 14 adjunct professorships, has 400+ publications with more than 16,000 citations, and serves as an editor or editorial board member for several international journals as well as for the CRC Press book series on electrochemical energy storage and conversion.
