Orientalism in US cinema

An excellent collection of historical appraisals of Orientalism in US cinema from the 20's on. Some essays, like much literary crit., are over-written, prolix I think is the word. No surprise. Entertaining and worth it.

Bias Unveiled

Visions of the East explores mass media biases and prejudices towards the Arab. It's an easy, interesting read; it focuses on examples and backrounds as a means of illustrating the inherant reacism ("Arabism") in popular culture. Too often we don't realize the stereotypes being publicized are just that- stereotypes. Visions of the East reminds the reader to look deeper, to examine material before absorbing it. An excellent book for better understanding the rampant Eurocentrism in media and film and the reasons behind it.

Paperback edition

The paperback edition is a mediocre reprint, worse than a cheap photocopy; all illustrations are by far too dark, sometimes almost entirely black and desperately need some contrast - in most cases you can hardly tell whether they show a movie still or just a sausage. A heavily overpriced item! - The book was shipped in a simple paper envelope three times as large as the book, which was - not surprisingly - on all edges and corners heavily bumped.
