Intriguing and Interesting
By Dan
I like to read about different topics and I found his book to be intriguing – apparently you don’t just have to be right, there is an art we should master.

The book was a pleasant read and I discovered a lot of interesting facts: sometimes you just need to create the illusion of being right.

In conclusion: a book which explains oratory techniques. I would have liked more examples on how to apply or counter each technique. Overall a good book and watching debates on TV will be fun from now on because I will try to see which technique the opponents are using.

About the Author
Chris Holland has been writing about movies since 1991. In 1996 he co-founded Stomp Tokyo, a film review web site described by the New York Times as "a place to indulge one's questionable cinematic taste." In 2003 Stomp Tokyo published a compendium of reviews in a book called "Reel Shame: Bad Movies and the Hollywood Stars Who Made Them." After moving in Austin in 2005, Chris spent two years at the Austin Film Festival as a marketing coordinator and now puts his expertise in movies and film festivals to use at B-Side Entertainment as the Manager of Festival Operations and as a marketing consultant for independent filmmakers looking to make a mark on the festival scene.

Very Good, a little basic and a little pricey
By Jason K.
I recently finished reading film festival secrets. I appreciate much of the advice found therein, but it can be exceedingly basic at times. The book is divided into the following categories:

1. Before You Submit
2. When You Submit
3. While You Wait
4. When You Get The Call
5. The Pre-Festival Push
6. At the Festival
7. Aftermath

Holland's enthusiasm is apparent, and he gives solid advice about Withoutabox, organization, and promotion as well as an amusing list of Filmmaking cliches. There is a reiteration that you need goals going into festivals, and a review of the basic marketing materials used for them. There are also good checklists to end each section.

That said the book feels very much geared to the neophyte filmmaker setting out on his very first festival run. A lot of common sense and little new information for twenty five dollars. Much is rehashed here, although in a convenient form all in one place.

Some books that I would recommend are Chris Gore's Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide, Friends Fans and Followers by Scott Kirsner, The New Rules of Marketing and PR by David Meerman Scott.

If you are very new, this is for you, but I find it a little too expensive for what is offered.

His "secrets" are Film Festival approved secrets.
By M. Pope
First off, he has a conflict of interest as he is now working for film festivals so don't be surprised when he advises you not to ask for a fee waiver. Frankly, I want to see a book about film festival secrets that is not endorsed by film festival programmers like this one was in some of the reviews. I want to read the real secrets they don't want you to know and the advice they hope you won't heed.

Frankly, I suspect him of orchestrating negative reviews for competing film festival books.

Apparently working at film festivals is not working out well for him cause he didn't last very long at the Atlanta Film Festival. Now he is working at the Portland Film Festival. I ignored his advice about applying to tier 1 first. I think short films should not be held out of the circuit to wait for for Sundance, etc., especially if your first or second film. Festivals don't have the same rules for short films they do for feature films, so why should you have the same strategy? I also ignored his advice about never asking for fee waivers. Frankly, the festivals I got into with only one exception were the ones for which I got a fee waiver, and the one I paid for and git in gave me a reduced fee. He is apparently working for the Atlanta Film Festival now and was working for the Austin film festival so I don't think he is going to tell us anything the festivals don't want us to know. There is no harm in asking for a fee waiver, especially if you are a poor student and or your film(s) have already screened at festivals. I can assure you a large percentage of films get waivers despite what Chris Holland may tell you and all the big budget films ask for and receive waivers? The earlier you submit in the festival's submission period the more likely you will get the waiver and the more successful you or your film has been the more likely you will get the waiver. If no waiver is granted they will often offer to give you the early bird submission price. Festival programmers break their "rules" all the time, including allowing late submissions. They can only say no.

As for this book, most is just common sense or reminder lists.

intimate look behind the film festival curtain
By Jeffrey D. Goodman
I read the book cover to cover and found it to be a great, extremely helpful read. The film festival circuit is so daunting, and there's so little material out there to help filmmakers navigate it all.

Little things in the book really stuck with me, like don't be nervous at the Q and A. If they've stuck around, they already have some interest in you and the film.

Thanks for writing this, Chris. It was really great!

Stuart Hall, by Chris Rojek

Stuart Hall is the leading figure in cultural studies today - no one else has had the same influence in the shaping of the field. This book is the first full-length study of Hall's work. It examines every aspect of his work and constitutes a major critical introduction and appraisal of Hall's contribution.
The book guides the reader through Hall's formative experience in Jamaica and Oxford. It examines the increasing politicization of his thought and his identification with emancipatory, socialist politics. In Birmingham, during his Directorship of the seminal Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies, Hall created a genuinely collaborative approach to the study of culture. In a series of dazzling publications in the 1970s, the Birmingham Centre changed the way in which social scientists think about culture. The book provides a complete guide to the debates and contribution of the Birmingham School. It explores Hall's relation with Marx, Gramsci, Althusser and a variety of traditions in continental sociology and philosophy.
In the 1980s Hall occupied the vanguard of criticism against Thatcherism and Reaganism. His passionate, principled attack on the New Right and his critique of authoritarian populism reached a readership well beyond the confines of the academy.

His later work has moved on to the terrain of hybridity, identity, Occidentalism, race relations. multiculturalism and the politics of difference. All of these areas are methodically explored in the book, making it the most complete study of Hall's work and significance. It will be required reading by students and lecturers in cultural studies, media studies and sociology.

Plus, the New Dorsai Companion contains, for the first time ever, an all new Concordance of the Childe Cycle--a roadmap of Dickson's massive and brilliant creation. Highly entertaining addition, but not required reading
By Michael Battaglia
Like "The Spirit of Dorsai" before, this volume fills in some elements of the overall Cycle and gives us some insight into some of the smaller details, but if you skip it you really won't be missing out on too much when you consider the overall picture. Basically this is two stories, one fairly long and the other fairly short. The first one "Lost Dorsai" is actually quite good, showing the flipside of the Dorsai philosophy, about a warrior who refuses to fight, but Dickson makes the interesting argument that being a Dorsai isn't a switch you can flip on and off and sometimes having to fight doesn't mean you need to use weapons. It's one of the best written portions of the series and even if it has little bearing on the rest of the books, the book is worth the read just for that story. Also, the tale finally delves into the relationship between the famous Graeme twins, Ian and Kensie. In other reviews I've pointed out that Dickson almost milks the brother Ian to death, showing us how he suffered in the wake of his brother's death, without really showing us what he was like while Kensie was still alive. Finally we get a story that not only has both of them alive but working together and while they are still kept at arm's length to some extent, it's a better look than we've had before and more than welcome. I doubt they'll be anymore Ian/Kensie stories but this one was just about what I was looking for. The other story in the book "Warrior" mostly showcases Ian (again, before his brother died, so while he's gloomy, he's not the epitome of death he would become later) going about his duty and dispensing some justice. It's good insight into the way his mind works, although it relies too heavily on a lot of weird things happening and Ian going, "Well I planned for all of that to happen" which is a rather annoying Dorsai trait. I do have to admit his plan is clever and shows some good insight into human psychology. So while it's not essential at all, it's an entertaining way to spend a half hour or so (that's all it took me to read that story). The illustrations that accompany the first story are also interesting, and help set the mood without literally depicting what's going on on the page. My version also has a medium size essay by a SF critic that is mostly gushing praise (some of it deserved, though at points it gets a little much) but also makes an attempt to bring up themes and such in the Cycle that even Dickson might not have originally envisioned. Oh, it also has an excerpt of "The Final Encyclopedia" but I'd rather just read the book itself. So overall, like I said, it colors in some of the lines of the series and showcases those always entertaining Graeme twins, but as far as the main thrust of the book is concerned, it's not exactly essential. That doesn't mean it isn't good (it is) but don't expect any major revelations or twists. That's all.

Not bad for a dollar
By Donal Fagan
In short, the novella Lost Dorsai was gripping and believable, but the short story Warrior was too vengeful and the plot was too hard to swallow. Lost Dorsai and Warrior were the first two for me, but apparently Dickson wrote several of these Childe Cycle stories. The absence of fantasy and magic reminds me of SciFi I read, and liked, in the 60s. Warrior is dated 1965, while Lost Dorsai is dated 1980.

But unlike, say, the grunts of Starship Troopers, the Dorsai are military savants who are too superior to be seriously challenged by their opponents. Dickson writes them into situations where they are overwhelmingly opposed, but they are still somehow in control. But even though they are very close to being comic book superheroes, in Lost Dorsai they have a certain dignity and restraint that makes it all sort of work. In Warrior, I couldn't sympathize with the "mission."

great read from a favorite author
By Kerry
Although some of Gordon Dickson's work has struck me as repetative, this was one of his better stories.

A very unique and heartwrenching tale of a soldier who puts aside the use of weapons. He gains victory for those he defends when he dies, due to his raw courage in stepping out to stand alone before the enemy in unarmed defiance. IT is a pure macho challenge that questions their bravery and as such it turns the allied enemy forces against each other when some seek to kill him while others decide to honor his moment of bravado by protecting him from their callous allies.

From Publishers Weekly
From hairy hominids, rational, self-aware human beings sprang into existence within a mere two million years--an eye-blink in geological terms. McCrone believes it was language that triggered the quantum leap in human development, allowing Homo sapiens to arise in the midst of an inhospitable ice age and sweep across the earth. McCrone re-creates the way our Homo ancestors' use of language might have made possible an inner dialogue dependent on the controlled recall of memories--a skill essential to self-awareness. The British science writer's controversial conclusion is that "the human mind is only a few degrees different from an animal's." Imagination, higher emotions and complex habits of thought, in his theory, are language-driven extensions of the animal mind. Imparting a shock of discovery, this exciting evolutionary odyssey seamlessly interweaves recent advances in linguistics, brain research, cognitive psychology and anthropology. Illustrations. Enjoyable, lucid survey with misleading oversimplifications
By D. Cloyce Smith
Even 12 years after it was published, McCrone's first book remains a lucid introduction to the workings of the human brain, the history of its evolution, and the role of language in the development of self-consciousness and intelligence. He discusses how the brain evolved over millions of years, then he narrows his focus to examine how, during the last 40,000 years, language and self-awareness enhanced the brain's capabilities (through a process he calls "cultural evolution"). With its lack of jargon, "The Ape That Spoke" could be read by non-scientists interested in pursuing the far more exhaustive (and perhaps intimidating) studies by the likes of Steven Pinker or Antonio R. Damasio.
The reader should be aware, however, that McCrone's survey is occasionally reductive or misleading. Its most noticeable shortcoming, as the author himself admits on his own Web site, is that the book is "pretty sketchy on the neurological underpinnings of consciousness." (His later books attempt to address this disparity.) Second, readers must be very attentive to the endnotes in order to differentiate between scientific findings and McCrone's frequent speculation. Third, the book often presents tentative scientific conclusions as established fact and skirts the heated debates among scientists regarding language, consciousness, and intelligence. (His neglect of neurological studies only exacerbates this weakness.)
Finally, and perhaps most important, McCrone repeatedly uses the concept of "evolution" when he means "progress," "change," or "development." (Two examples selected from dozens: "Language gave early man just such a way to evolve and pass on complex ideas." "But now technology is starting to open the door to rapid mental evolution.") Even McCrone acknowledges that such oversimplification is not always useful when talking about something as complex as evolution, "where an effect can be its own cause and . . . where stable patterns emerge as what works outlasts what does not." Yet he nevertheless persists in using "evolution" in its metaphorical sense. Such vagueness may be appropriate for some topics, but it is certainly confusing in a book on evolution and language. In particular, as Stephen Jay Gould notes in "Full House," the term "cultural evolution" should be abandoned altogether, since societal transformation, unlike evolutionary change, can occur--and regress--both rapidly and deterministically (e.g., humans can easily and radically influence the direction of their culture and still remain human, but they cannot alter the genetic makeup they collectively inherited from evolutionary processes!).
Keeping in mind these caveats and shortcomings, diligent readers might still find McCrone's survey a useful introduction to more accurate and complex works on the topic.

This book makes anthropology more gripping than fiction
By bilge@transmeta.com
I picked up my copy of "The Ape That Spoke" in the overstock bins at my local bookstore, so who could have imagined that it would be one of the most engaging books I had ever picked up? Like the PBS series "Connections", the author weaves disparate threads of topics into an easily understood foundation for social fabric. "The Ape That Spoke" reveals current theories about why intelligence was a successful factor in human evolution. It relates the power of speech with self expression then with social interaction. The ability to formulate complex expression is then shown in the contexts of prehistoric man as well as modern life. The viability of these theories is backed by a description of the data from experimentation. This helps ground the theories so that it is easy to follow the conclusions made by the anthropologists whose work is represented by the book's author. I'd encourage the reading of this book for anyone with a curiosity about the workings of the mind, and further would suggest it as a required reading for a college philosophy course.

I read this book for a book review I had to do for my "Mind Brain and Behavior" class in college. It was a very simple book to read and understand. I dont neccessarily agree with all McCrone has to say, but he does do an excellent job at making his ideas clear to the reader. I also enjoyed the fact that he had stories, etc. to help the average reader understand it more.

As a society, we are fascinated by crime. It is something that dominates our interest, given the high viewership and ratings for shows such as Law & Order and Criminal Minds. We remain highly interested not only in the way the crime is committed, and then solved, but also in the psyche of the criminal.

What possibly could have forced them to commit their crime? What was the impulse behind their actions? Was it that they had faced some abuse in the past? Were they pure evil? These are the questions the public struggles with.

In this book, we will talk about not of any crime such as tearing a parking ticket, but serious crimes that shook the fabric of society when they were discovered. They were crimes of such magnitudes that we as a society couldn’t believe someone could have descended to such depths.

They went against every core belief that we hold strictly as the prerogative of humanity.

Just finished reading this book, and I loved it. The book is well written and very easy to comprehend, for readers of all levels. I have always been really interested in crimes and serial killers, and love doing research on them. I really enjoyed that this book went into personal details of the peoples' lives. It's more in depth and sheds light on the mental aspect of the offenders than most other books I have read. I really like getting all the details that weren't really famous, it really gives you the full picture.

    By SONYA MELTON
True Crime Stories is full of interesting and scary facts about things people that are featured in the book do. I remember reading about some of these but not all of them. The book doesn't just talk about facts. It gives you a little peek into the lives of the people who were murdering and the person who did the crime. The stories are short and to the point, and it keeps readers looking for more. The stories are well written and to the point.

From Book 1:

Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they’re triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful Gorgon maligned in myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.
