About the Author
Michael Locke served on the first Silver Lake Neighborhood Council as Region 1 representative and vice chair, and was founder of the Beautification Committee. Since 2003, he has edited and published the Silver Lake News, an online community newspaper. He also contributes to the Los Feliz Ledger, the Los Feliz Observer and the Los Angeles City Historical Society newsletter. He lives in the Durex Model Home (L.A. Historic-Cultural Landmark No. 1025) in Los Feliz with his wife Donna Jean. Vincent Brook has a PhD in film and television from UCLA. He teaches media studies at UCLA, USC, Cal-State LA and Pierce College, and has authored or edited five books, most recently Land of Smoke and Mirrors: A Cultural History of Los Angeles" and "Woody on Rye: Jewishness in the Films and Plays of Woody Allen" (both 2013). Born in Van Nuys, he has lived in Silver Lake with his wife Karen since 1978."

I grew up in the Silver Lake District in the late 1930's, 1940's, and early 1950's. As kids we played in its streets, walked and in our early teens also biked endlessly over and around the area's hills, and rode the Pacific Electric Streetcars that ran on Sunset Boulevard to Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles. My memories of this time are pleasantly nostalgic, but had not until reading this book included an extensive knowledge of Silver Lake's history or the many personalities that lived there. Today's Silver Lake, viewed at least from the distance of my East Coast residence, seems a far more distinct and unique part of Los Angeles than my impressions from "back then." But this engaging narrative, well illustrated with many photographs, describes well the history and early evolution of one of the most uniquely attractive locales that Los Angeles has to offer. I look forward to Michael Locke future work in bringing Silver Lake's evolving history all the way to the present.

Layers of history

I very much enjoyed this instructing and entertaining history of the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles. It is richly illustrated with old photographs of historic Silver Lake, often alongside recent photographs of the same locations. I learned about colorful characters about whom I had heard a little before who had just been names to me, including early film stars like Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Mack Sennett, and Tom Mix. I also found out about equally colorful characters who I had never heard of before. Now I see Silver Lake as a place with layers of history and connections that radiate outward into Los Angeles, California, and the world.
