Surviving Passion (The Shattered World Book 1), by Maia Underwood

"It's a strange time when the safest place in the world is in the arms of the person who frightens you the most."

After the violent death of her father, it is Selena who becomes the ghost. Every day is a lone struggle for survival in the wilderness, more than a decade after the fall of modern civilization. No longer subject to law, order, or the social norms of its domestic past, the primal nature of man has reared its head with alarming swiftness.

From her own frightening experiences, Selena has learned just how dangerous men are. Now, she avoids them at all costs, mastering a thoroughly elusive lifestyle, until she meets her match. After a chance encounter, Selena's life is swept on a tide of chaotic involvement with Dan, an intense but disciplined leader who clashes with her approach to survival on every level. Through her wild experiences with this frightening but captivating man, Selena learns that the human animal loves as passionately as it kills.

Note: This novel is more dramatic, suspenseful and adventurous than sweet, loving and traditional.
Caution: Contains explicit sex scenes.

So, so much more than romance
By Jessie Potts
This book I would not call a romance, then again it isn't just a post apocalypse either, it's so much more. Maia Underwood has created a believable and tormented world. After the economy falls, the world falls and of course, thank you human nature, the human race begins it's rapid decline back to primitive times. Women are scarce and therefore a commodity. Communities with any form of civilization or morals are hard to find, and the worst are the human parasites that run in packs just taking whatever they need from whomever.

The story opens with a beautiful women looking desperately in a ghost town for any kind of survival books. She's been on her own for four years, her father died hiding her from above mentioned parasites, her mother died years ago. Unfortunately she's not alone and the chase is on, her vs. 5 or 6 bigger, stronger men who have probably been without... hmmmm... female companionship for a while. Lucky for her, her hiding spot is the same as Dan's. She's very lucky he found her, he comes from a community that abides by a code of laws, woman aren't just taken, and everyone helps out in the community. Selena's been alone far too long to trust anyone especially a 'community' of seven men and only four women. Well.... it doesn't really look like Dan will give her a choice.

My friends that is only the beginning, what follows next is a journey into the future, a future that is scary and feral and often times cruel. This isn't a romance, in fact there are only a couple... 'forest' scenes in the book. It's more about the morality of mankind, the journey of a woman and the fall of a man. Selena isn't used to interacting with people, this makes her a danger to herself. Dan isn't used to allowing himself the freedom of, well I guess un-controlledness. He's very controlled and very calculating, nothing will or can change that. There are good fight scenes in this book, there is murder, there is talk of rape, there is kidnapping and there is failure.

All in all it was absolutely fantastic! I would recommend this to anyone, romance seekers, thrill seekers, end of world junkies, or just plain ole bibliophiles. It was truly a rare treat. It ended too soon though! Tell me there is more, tell me we get to see into the next time....

Surprisingly good but a little off.
By Amazon Customer
This was a very good debut novel from new direct-to-digital novelist Maia Underwood. I really enjoyed the concept of a disastrous future environment. Underwood imagines an America after an event has happened "The Crash" which basically was a financial failure.

"... the global economy had crumbled, forcing the closure of many industrial... giants; and bringing the essential transportation and distribution of goods to a grinding halt. ... the old way of life began to disintegrate... global anarchy took root.... (2%)."

It is in this environment that young Selena was raised, living with her parents on the run. Lucky for her, her mother was a nurse and her father an anthropologist, so she was able to learn survival skills from them, including becoming a leatherworker. After her parents have passed, Selena lives like a ghost in the shadows, deftly avoiding human contact. In the time of anarchy, other humans are a threat, not only because they would rob her, but could also threaten her virtue.

Eventually she runs into Dan... the son of a Special Forces Unit Military Officer who "convinces" the young lady to come with him and join a small hidden community of nice humans who have banded together. Selena has been far too long without human contact and it takes her time to learn to grapple with the struggles of living with others but she eventually finds her place.

As much as I enjoyed this novel... I'd say it was only good (not great) because it was marketed as a romance and it just wasn't very romantic. There is absolutely no POV from Dan, the hero, and the story is almost entirely from the perspective of Selena. Dan is silent and unreadable and for the most of the novel, since we're not told what he's thinking even from his inner dialogue, there is little to no interaction between the two characters. At the point that the heroine provoked the hero into chasing her (which is all they do... she runs, he chases... the one time he doesn't chase she's disappointed...) anyway, by the time the love scene comes I wasn't convinced the two had fallen in love or why. They'd literally exchanged only a few sentences to each other. Literally. I was also disappointed that the heroine said "no" and "i hate you" to the hero when they made love. Not very romantic. After this love scene, they resort back to having little interaction with each other until the end.

Beyond that, I kept wondering where all the humans had gone. The Crash doesn't explain why there is mass loss of life. This novel read as though there had been a nuclear fallout or a plague or something... leaving only remnant humans to and large cities completely abandoned. The only explanation is that humans died off because they were so dumb... when the cans and food ran out in the stores after being ransacked, they just didn't know what to do. Somehow this just didn't seem right to me. The whole explanation for The Crash just seemed a little flimsy. Financial global failure? Hmmmm.

But overall, the story was good and the price was right.

Astonishingly good
By Casey Dare
After the fall of modern civilization, Selena and her parents strive to live in a world where survival of the fittest is the norm and the innocent, like Selena, live in constant danger. There are no laws, no order, and when a man attacks 12-year-old Selena, her parents rush her into seclusion. They learn how to survive on their own in the mountains; to hunt, fish, make shelter, and make clothing using leather hides. When the opportunity arises, they scavenge abandoned homes and towns for anything useful for their survival. The story opens on one such opportunity. Now 24, and four years on her own since her parent's deaths, Selena finds an abandoned home and searches for How-To books. While there, five rough and dangerous men arrive and in a panic, Selena steals one of their horses and rides fast and furiously to the closest town. It is there she meets Dan, a man determined to save her - whether she appreciates it or not. This novel follows the tale of Dan and Selena as they struggle against the criminal elements of the time, and with their growing feelings for each other. Selena, unwilling to place neither her very life nor her trust in Dan, fights him every step of the way. And no matter that she has tried to kill him and runs away every chance she gets, Dan is determined to take her to safety, his village, and hopefully his bed. Dan is a super hero. He is strong and brave and feels that he must be in control at all times - especially his emotions. This control, and the final breaking of it, is what spurs the most passionate and erotic episode I've had the pleasure of reading in a very long time. Ms. Underwood's ability to portray Selena's chaotic emotions as she learns to trust, accept and love Dan is breathtaking. The world she describes following the downfall of humanity, the abandoned homes, the struggle for survival, the resourcefulness of the survivors, is believable and realistic. The powerful emotions and final gripping conclusion will leave you thinking about this story for days and weeks to come. It may make you wonder - are you prepared for the future? Do you have the skills, determination and stamina to survive a crash of this proportion? It makes me wonder - will there be a Dan for me? I read over 500 books in 2010 and this one was, hands down, my absolute favorite.
